The Heather and Hillforts Project was selected as one of only 3 Countryside Exchange Visits that took place in the UK in 2004. Eight experts from North America and the UK worked within the Heather and Hillforts Project Area for a week in October, with the aim of identifying practical answers to current issues.

The Countryside Exchange Programme provided an unique opportunity to share experiences and expertise and to work on common problems with individuals from both sides of the Atlantic. The 2004 UK Exchange Programme was managed by CEI Associates.

During their study visit the experts were asked to put forward recommendations, new ideas and solutions as to how the Heather and Hillforts Project can contribute towards:

• Improving the management of the heather habitat for conservation purposes, recognising the need for agricultural productivity.
• Enhancing the experiences of local communities and visitors through greater appreciation and understanding of the hillfort and habitat heritage.
• Gauging the perception of the local community about their upland heritage and how to increase their participation in its protection.

During their stay the Countryside Exchange Team met with farmers, people working in the area, members of the local community and businesses to inform their research.

The recommendations of the Countryside Exchange were considered by the Heather and Hillforts Partnership Board and used to inform and develop potential programmes and projects.
