Heather management is essential to sustain moorland areas for both wildlife and agriculture.
Change in agricultural policy and practice has meant that over the past 50 years large areas of the moorland within the Heather and Hillforts Project Area have remained unmanaged.
The Project aims to develop a moorland demonstration programme, in partnership that will include heather management through burning and cutting, together with bracken control. A moorland watch initiative and a fire risk management project will also be established, with the aim of adopting a proactive approach to minimising future damage to the habitat.
The long-term aim is to facilitate areas of Common Land to enter into national agreements that will support the management of the uplands.
Three key projects will be developed under the Our Moorland Heritage theme:
Moorland Restoration
To reinstate the favourable condition of upland moorland areas of the Clwydian Range and Llantysilio Mountains, for the benefit of conservation, agricultural productivity and public enjoyment
Moorland Watch Scheme
To take action to limit the illegal use of the moorland uplands within the project by 4x4 vehicles and off-road motorcycles
Moorland Management Demonstration
To take action to reduce the risk to the heather moorland and archaeological sites from large-scale unintentional heather burns and to develop a training programme to increase traditional moorland management skills.
