Every year over half a million people visit the Heather and Hillforts Project Area and many are completely unaware of the natural and historic significance of their destination.
The hillfort settlements were built on the hill tops to take advantage of easily defendable sites, which means that these areas will remain inaccessible to some.
Bringing the experience of the uplands to a wider audience, through accessible interpretation, is one of the Project's aims - to make the special heritage of the area available to those who would otherwise be unable to enjoy these sites. Increasing public participation in the management of the uplands will also create a greater understanding of the value of these special areas.
Eight key projects will be developed as part of the Understanding Our Uplands theme:
Interactive Heritage Trail
To increase people's awareness and understanding of the landscape by providing an interactive heritage trail on the history and natural heritage in the Project Area that could be accessed through mobile phones and other audio/visual equipment.
Iron Age Hoard and Moorland Treasure Chest
To provide education resource support material for teachers in an easily accessible format to promote and facilitate learning about the natural and historic heritage of the uplands.
Accessible Interpretation
To provide a comprehensive website where people can access information about the Heather and Hillforts Landscape Partnership Scheme.
On-site Interpretation
To develop a series of interpretation boards placed at strategic car park access points to the heather moorland and hillfort sites.
Young Volunteer Days
To establish specific days to encourage young people to become involved in the management of their local heritage.
Sharing Best Practice
To share the experience and lessons learnt through the implementation of the Heather and Hillforts Project.
Heather and Hillforts Exhibition
To develop an interactive exhibition which will tour venues such as local shows and events, community halls and libraries within and outside the Project Area.
Heather and Hillforts Publications
To raise the profile of the area by developing a series of publications in a variety of formats to increase awareness and understanding of the upland heritage in the Clwydian Range and Llantysilio Mountains.
