Much of the UK's heathlands have been lost to afforestation. Within the Clwydian range and Llantysilio mountains, the largest such plantation is Coed Moel Famau. These plantations provide excellent cover for Black Grouse. Coed Moel Famau is managed in partnership between the Forestry Commission and Denbighshire Countryside Service. To create a more natural, dappled edge to the forest, many trees have been felled and been naturally replaced by heathland. It is in areas such as this where Black Grouse are doing so well. The heathland within the forest boundary is an excellent example of what all heaths would look like without grazing. Heathland management within the forest is far more labour intensive. |
