The Heather and Hillforts project has teamed up with Denbighshire Youth Service bringing groups of young people out into the Clwydian Range from Rhyl and Dyserth.

p1060312Erin and I met with Jay McGuiness who turned up at Moel Famau Car Park with a group of 8 lads from Rhyl and we set off along the Offa’s Dyke National Trail to the top of Moel Famau.  Along the way we met Sharon Woods the Warden for Moel Famau as she was working with volunteers repairing erosion on this extremely popular path.  She needed help to move two large round heather bales a good way up towards the summit – using the heather to repair the erosion to the path.

They were big and heavy things but the lads made light work of it – rolling them up hill towards the top – well – fairly light work of it !!

At the top the group then did great work helping to clean some graffiti off the Jubilee Tower, then down into the forest to clear young conifer saplings off a clear felled area – now nicely reverting to moorland.  This is great black grouse habitat and the work we did here will help to keep it this way.

Thanks to Denbighshire Youth Service and those that came out from Dyserth on Monday and Rhyl on Tuesday.

The group from Rhyl also made some very interesting miniature models of the Jubilee Tower whilst having their lunch at the top – check them out !!
