What a day! Best case scenario would have been warm, not too hot, but sunny and clear. What did we get? Thick, damp mist!
Today, Fiona the County Archaeologist, Sharon the Forest Partnership Warden and I took 45 pupils from Ysgol Melyd to Moel Famau. We were all set to speak about the magnificent views and the wonderful Iron Age hillforts dominating the hillsides but unfortunately we couldn’t see them! However, we had a great time walking up from Bwlch Pen Barras to the Jubilee Tower (which appeared from nowhere as we approached the top, covered in mist) and the surrounding heather moorland, bilberry, the cuts and burns and using our imagination to visualise the hillforts and the Vale of Clwyd.
As we approached the top of Moel Famau we had an unexpected visitor in the form of a Red Legged Partridge! He was incredibly friendly and was more than happy to join us for lunch, on the proviso that he was able to clean up the crumbs as we left for the route back down through Coed Moel Famau.
